Sustainability issues in workplace design projects are topics that drive us all.

The “Anti-waste for a circular economy” (AGEC) and “Climate and Resilience” laws, respectively promulgated on February 10, 2020 and August 22, 2021, aim to transform our lifestyles in order to move towards a more sustainable model of society. They aim to limit waste but also to preserve natural resources, biodiversity and the climate by transforming our system: they aim to move from a linear economy (producing, consuming, discarding) to a circular economy. These two laws recall the importance of reuse in the field of office furniture. The AGEC law also introduces an obligation for public companies to acquire goods derived from reuse, reuse or containing recycled materials.

Presentation and objectives

AGEC law

Transforming our system in depth: this is the objective of the anti-waste law for a circular economy, whose 130 articles make it possible to fight against all different forms of waste. The law aims to transform our linear economy, producing, consuming, discarding, into a circular economy.

It is divided into five main areas:

  • Get rid of disposable plastic;
  • Better inform consumers;
  • Fight against waste and for solidarity reuse;
  • Take action against planned obsolescence;
  • Producing better.

Climate and Resilience Law

It fights against climate change and strengthens resilience in the face of its effects.

The law is structured around the five themes on which the Citizens' Climate Convention (CCC) debated and presented its proposals in June 2020: consuming, producing and working, moving, housing and food. It also reinforces sanctions in case of damage to the environment.

It is a law that will greatly change things in France to work better with products but also to increase the resilience of French people in the face of climate change. Article 2 of this law initiated the environmental labelling project on all everyday consumer products with, over time, scores on clothing, food, furniture and cosmetics“, Camille Cousté, co-founder ofEco Impact, first furniture eco score, member of the working group on “furniture” environmental labelling with the Ministry.

These laws and office furniture?

Each year more than 2 million tons of furniture are thrown away in France. Among these 2 million pieces of waste, 250,000 tons correspond to business furniture.

Since January 2022, various sectors of French industry have had to comply with new obligations and implement new production habits.

They must in fact establish solutions concerning office furniture:

  • All retailers are obliged to offer furniture take-back solutions to their customers. The criteria are different depending on the size of the company.
  • For unsold furniture, it can no longer be destroyed or thrown away. It must be offered as a donation to associations, social and solidarity economy structures to fight against precariousness.
  • The recycling, reuse and reuse of furniture should be preferred.

These two laws recall the importance of reuse in the field of office furniture.

Article 58 of the AGEC law also introduces an obligation for buyers from the State and local authorities to acquire goods derived from reuse, reuse or containing recycled materials up to 20% of second-hand office furniture and 15% integrating recycled material per year.

Our approach

At Hexagone, CSR is the DNA of our brand.

We created Hexagreen in order to meet these new guidelines for reuse and upcycling but also and above all because we firmly believe that we can make your old aging furniture look beautiful. With the creation of our solution Hexagreen, we are in a position to offer facilities that not only precisely meet the expectations of our customers but also contribute to the enhancement of our environment.

On the packaging side, 100% of cartons and pallets are reused, recycled and optimized for transport. To stop the use of polluting packaging (bubble wrap, thermoformed plastic, etc.) and reduce products damaged upon delivery, we have also invested in an automated machine for packaging on demand, optimized, responsible and of course 100% ecological!

We adhere to Valdelia, an eco-organization that provides professionals with the collection and recycling of used furniture free of charge. In addition, we offer our customers to recover their old furniture in order to add it to ours in the Valdelia dumpster (subject to conditions of the volume of furniture) to facilitate their path to recycling and their second life.

To conclude, the AGEC and Climate and Resilience laws are a major advance in promoting the circular economy and strengthening sustainability in the field of office furniture. By establishing reuse and recycling quotas, it encourages public companies to rethink their purchasing strategies and to favour sustainable solutions.

To do this, we make it a point of honor to support you in your support projects, in particular on the subject of reuse, thanks to our solution Hexagreen.
