The Impact of Colors on Productivity and Wellbeing

Colors play a crucial role in creating a pleasant and productive work environment. Different hues can influence our mood, energy, and even efficiency.

Studies show that well-colored workspaces can increase employee productivity and well-being. A study by the University of Exeter, on the other hand, showed that employees who worked in an environment decorated with plants and art were 17% more productive than those who worked in functional but uncluttered spaces.

Premises adapted to the needs of your employees contribute to keeping them in good health. Who says environment, says decoration! We therefore come back to colors, which represent an essential element in a room.

In order for employees to feel good about their work environment, it is also a good idea to include them in decision-making about decoration and furniture choices. In order to create a space in the image of CA-GIP employees, they fully participated in choosing the ambiance of their future workspaces:

“Different worlds were proposed to employees through a survey, a little over a year before the delivery of the new spaces. The project selected was one focused on the technological universe, in shades of blue.” explains Agnès Nouvel, the architect.

The choice of colors for a workspace

When choosing colors for a workspace, it's important to consider the purpose of each zone. Calming colors like greens and blues are often used to reduce stress, while bright, stimulating colors, like yellow and orange, can promote creativity and innovation.

Here are some tips for choosing colors for the room:

  • For individual offices, you can opt for soft and soothing colors such as light blue or green to promote concentration and reduce stress.
  • For a meeting room, use neutral colors with bright accents, such as gray with touches of red or orange, can encourage discussion and collaboration without being too distracting.
  • In relaxation areas, warm but soft colors will be preferred that can help employees relax and recharge.
  • For spaces that require a lot of brainstorming and creativity, bright, stimulating colors like yellow and orange can be very effective.

The assembly of colors

Assembling colors is just as important as choosing individual colors. A harmonious combination can create a balanced and pleasant atmosphere, while poor assembly can cause a feeling of clutter and distraction. Here are some basic principles for assembling colors in a workspace:

  • Contrast: Use color contrasts to define spaces and draw attention to specific elements. The hall in La Maison Volubilis is a good example with this orange wall that perfectly highlights our “family photos”.
  • Balance : Make sure that the colors chosen are balanced and do not dominate the space. Too many bright colors can be overwhelming, while too many neutral tones can make the space feel monotonous.
  • Coherence : Maintain color consistency across the workspace to create a seamless visual experience. This can be achieved by using a limited color palette and by repeating certain tints in different decor elements.
